Citation, Citation, Citation: Why AI Legal Work Lives or Dies on Verification

The examples aren't obscure. The Alabama Supreme Court sanctioned an attorney whose briefs cited nonexistent cases. The Sixth Circuit sanctioned attorneys over a filing with 24+ fake citations. A federal court in Oregon imposed severe sanctions. A California firm was ordered to pay roughly $31,100.

Why "the AI is usually right" isn't good enough

Most tools ask you to trust one probabilistic system. Then they ask that same system to check its own work — which means the check shares the model's blind spot. One source verifying itself isn't verification. It's confidence.
